FIELD RANGER AND VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR
SBNFA Field Ranger Volunteer Program
This position is a full-time, 40+ hours per week, salaried, overtime exempt
position. The position reports to and works for the SBNFA Deputy Director,
leading and managing the organizationâ™s newly developed Field Ranger
Volunteer Program. The positionâ™s duty station resides at the San
Bernardino National Forest - Mountaintop Ranger District - Big Bear field
office. The position is responsible to provide overall Field Ranger duties
for the Mountaintop Ranger District, as well as volunteer management for
the Field Ranger Volunteer program. The incumbent is highly involved in
public information and education, and is expect to engage in partnership
and resource development. This position works in close partnership and
collaboration with the Mountaintop District Ranger Recreation Officer.
Approximately 60% of the incumbentâ™s time is spent in the field conducting
Field Ranger duties, half of which is devoted to recreation and facility
maintenance efforts. The goal of the Coordinator is to have a healthy work
force of volunteer Field Rangers active every day.
Job Duties
Works with the Mountaintop Ranger District Recreation Officer and the SBNFA
Deputy Director to identify program goals and objectives and ensures that
these goals and objectives are met.
Based on the goals and objectives, designs and develops management
structures and procedures to ensure the effective smooth running of the
program and good communications throughout.
Developments and designs program brochure, recruiting materials, and
volunteer management database.
Develops program specifics, including training outline, volunteer job
descriptions and performance expectations.
Recruits, trains, manages, motivates and recognizes Field Ranger
Volunteers.
Completes financial administration and reporting tasks.
Provides monthly work accomplishment reports and statistics related to the
program.
Management, leadership and chairing of the programâ™s Advisory Council.
Provides recreation fee educational information, in keeping with the values
and mission of SBNFA and the Forest Service friendly flyer intent.
Coordinates and leads monthly volunteer meetings, and any other meetings
needed to help the program run effectively.
Collaboratively creates an annual maintenance plan for facilities and
recreation sites on the Mountaintop Ranger District, to be approved by the
program Liaison.
Maintains the Field Ranger Program website.
Ensures the financial health of the program by engaging in resource
development activities.
Provides support and administrative duties for supervisor, and other SBNFA
leadership.
Ensures a positive image of the program, volunteers, and coordinates
participation in community events.
Maintains all volunteer records, hours and up to date training
documentation.
Maintains documentation of public contacts and project accomplishments on
the ground.
Maintains close partnership with the Field Ranger Program Liaison and other
key Forest Service contacts.
Ensures adequate promotions and media contacts for the program, and works
collaboratively to ensure appropriate messages and information are being
distributed in the field and to the public.
Responds to information requests in a timely and thorough manner.
Writes and designs brochures and other printed materials needed for the
program, including press releases, etc.
Maintains program records on the Forest Service server and ensures that all
files are safely backed up.
Completes correspondence for the program.
Conducts mailings and ensures publication of a regular newsletter.
Any administrative duties related to management of the program.

development pieces, such as trifold brochures, flyers, etc.
Qualifications
A minimum of 5 years of experience in land management field-work and
recreation facility maintenance, or equivalent. Administrative skills,
people skills, and leadership skills.
· Computer experience essential (MS Office Suite, internet savvy)
· Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills, both written and
oral, taking into account the wide variety of constituents and stakeholders
· Friendly, articulate and a good listener
· Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
· Experience and/or familiarity with various tools used for maintenance
of facilities and recreation areas, and ability to teach others how to
safely use these tools
· Strong multitasking skills, with the ability to meet deadlines
· Excellent problem solving skills, and ability to make good judgments
· Ability to think independently and communicate ideas concisely
· Ability to set priorities, organize time efficiently and balance
several tasks at once, and complete quality work by deadline
· Graphics design and brochure layout skills a plus
· Practical and technical knowledge of recreation issues on the forest,
and standard Forest Service recreation area operations, regulations and
procedures.
· Knowledge of recreation safety and health standards and processes.
· Broad writing skills, adaptable to a variety of needs from press
releases, to reports, to brochures and appeal letters
· Type 40 WPM preferred
· Must be able to sit for long periods of time, complete repetitive
motion tasks, grasp, reach, lift up to 50 lbs., type for extended periods,
and travel by car.
· Ability to report to a duty station in Big Bear.
· Ability to travel for field visits and meetings in other areas as
appropriate for the program.
Salary: $30,000-$35,000 pay range, plus 50% paid medical benefits
